The Bridge over the River Kwai is located a few kilometers outside the city center. This infamous iron bridge was part of the Death Railway to Myanmar (Burma) and was made famous by the movie of the same name. It was built during World War II by prisoners of war who were made to work for the Japanese forces. Tens of thousands of workers died in horrifying conditions while building the bridge. There are also many World War II historical attractions in the city, including cemeteries and museums. You can find a range of hotels for all budgets and because the city is so popular with tourists, there are good restaurants that serve international foods and excellent Thai food.

Kanchanaburi can be visited around the year. The monsoon season in Thailand lasts from June to September, but the city is accessible even during the rainy season. Kanchanaburi is easily reached from Bangkok by train or by bus. Even though most visitors come to see the famous bridge, Kanchanaburi is a lovely place to stay and relax for a few days.
