Kaohsiung, Taiwan is a modern city in the southwestern part of the island of Taiwan. The Port of Kaohsiung is the largest harbor in the country. Kaohsiung has a tropical climate with ocean, mountains and forests nearby. In addition, the city itself has many public works of art, museums and other attractions. Although modern architecture abounds, it is worth exploring the rapidly disappearing older parts of town. Other unique features around Kaohsiung are Shoushan or Monkey Mountain, the Dome of Light stained glass artwork, and the Fho-Kwang Shan monastery.
Because Kaohsiung city has a large variety of accommodations and restaurants from budget hostels and street food vendors to high end hotels and expensive restaurants, this is a great place for individuals, couples, and groups to travel. Visit the Liouho Night Market for tourist shopping, games and food or Uncle Chuan's Tea House for souvenirs and gifts. Consider a night out at the Urban Spotlight for an evening of live local bands or enjoy one of the local nightclubs. A fun way to explore is by bicycle. Ride north along the Love River towards the Art Museum and older parts town, or try the bike routes around the Sun Yet-Sen University. Other options are to ride around the coastal side of Shoushan Mountain or take a bike on the ferry across the harbor and ride through the streets on the north side of Cijin Island.
Kaohsiung is one of the country's sunniest cities and has temperatures ranging from 67˚ to 85˚F. However, June to August is the rainiest time of the year. A good time to visit is during the Chinese New Year holiday, to see the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival along the Love River. Celebrations include folk performances, light shows, music and booths with handicrafts and food. The city and surrounding area is a wonderful place to hike, bike, walk and explore. It is a city of architecture, diverse art and culture with something for everybody.
