Kataragama is a town that is located in the south-east corner of the island of Sri Lanka, 138 Miles from Colombo. It is well known for its cultural and religious significance. It serves as a place of pilgrimage for Buddhist, Muslim, Vedda and Hindu people. Therefore, it is a multi-religious sacred city. Apart from being the home of the devout, it also hosts a famous festival during the months of July and August, which features flag hoisting, the water cutting ceremony and fire walking rituals. The procession, known as the Perehara, lasts for 14 days and nights.

The perahera or procession is held at night and involves a variety of activities, the most significant one being fire walking.
