Pulau Tiga is a small and beautiful island in Kimanis Bay, off the Western coast of the Sabah. It is a part of the three islands that comprise the Pulau Tiga National Park, and is also referred to as the Survivor Island.
The island is a popular holiday destination and is spread a little over two square miles. Scientists believe that the Pulau Tiga was formed due to a volcanic eruption near Borneo, in 1897. The active mud volcanoes, at the highest point of the island, are one of its many attractions. The volcanic mud is believed to have therapeutic effects and many a tourist is known to indulge in a mud bath.
The jungles of Pulau Tiga have a diverse range of flora and fauna including mammals, reptiles and birds. The island is declared as a forest reserve. This means that it is protected, and its virgin beauty will continue to surprise and mesmerize visitors for a long time to come. There are many jungle trails for visitors to explore and each offers something special in terms of the topography and sights. Visitors can plan to camp overnight at existing shelters within the Base Camp.
The island has only one resort which offers several dive courses for the novice as well as for experienced divers. There are many dive sites on the island; each offers a spectacular view of the waters that surround the island. Snorkeling and scuba diving is allowed in specific parts of the island. You can expect to see colorful fishes, soft and hard coral, sea snakes and a plethora of echinoderms, such as sea stars and feather stars.
