Hong Kong as a tour and holiday destination

Hong Kong is probably the best example of an international city, a representation of how well East and West can converge seamlessly. Hong Kong or HK is a Special Administrative Region and is technically ruled by the government of China. However, it keeps its own legal system and currency. Hong Kong is right next door to Shenzhen, China and across the China Sea from Macau. If you are thinking of going on a holiday, Hong Kong, which means "fragrant harbor" in Cantonese, is the perfect destination.

Must-visit places in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is known for its beautiful sights and for its shopping. From high-end designer duds to thrift shop chic, Hong Kong has it all. Try the areas in Central, Causeway Bay and Admiralty. In Kowloon, check out the shops towards Victoria Harbour in the Tsim Sha Tsui district. Another reason why tourists can't get enough of Hong Kong is its rich culture. It is home to many Buddhist and Taoist temples, museums and nature parks that can be explored by foot. When the sun goes down, head off to Kowloon, Lan Kwai Fong or Wan Chai for some of the region's best nightlife. For tourists who prefer a quieter and slightly wilder version of largely cosmopolitan Hong Kong, head off to the New Territories for picnics and walking tours. Hong Kong also offers plenty of activities for individuals and groups of all ages, from the HK Disneyland and The Peak to Lantau Island and Ocean Park, there are plenty of things to do and see for families. As for food, Hong Kong boasts of some of the best restaurants in the region and maybe the world. Have your fill of the famous Hong Kong dim sum, bite-size pieces of steamed, baked or pan-fried dumpling filled with meat, seafood, fruits, nuts and vegetables. Hong Kong has a proud tradition of noodlemaking, with some practices dating back for generations. The city is also well-known for its fresh seafood and barbecue roasts that feature pork, chicken and duck.

Best time to visit Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a fairly good climate year-round, so tours are usually available any time of the year. However, be aware that the months of May until the middle of September can get wet, humid and hot, with more rains occurring in August. If you want to enjoy a more comfortable and rain-free holiday, try flying in from mid-September to April. Probably the biggest attraction in Hong Kong is the Chinese New Year, which usually falls on the first day of the Lunar month. However, tourists may also consider coming to celebrate some of the city's most important festivals, such as the Spring Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Winter Solstice Festival.
