At 4,095 metres high Low’s Peak, the summit of Mount Kinabalu is the tallest in Malaysia and the 20th tallest in the world. For avid climbers it’s not difficult to the summit but others may find it steep and tough.

Generally if you are reasonaby fit the climb is not difficult but care has to be taken to avoid altitude problems. Above all don't rush. Even if you take intermittent stops to recover for twenty or thirty seconds you will eventually get there. If you rush it's likely you won't.

The walk is usually done over two days, and there is a hut 800 metres below the summit with hot running water for walkers to stay overnight, before scaling the final 800 metres of naked granite, often above the clouds, which takes between two and four hours. Climbing Kinabalu would allow you to see its miraculous biodiversity and numerous unique and exotic species, especially the orchids and pitcher plants. More than 1,500 orchid varieties, 280 species of birds and strange insect-eating plants have been found. You can look for the parasitic Rafflesia plants that produce a fleshy red flower up to 3 feet (0.9 m) across. It’s more likely you will smell its rotting stench than actually see one though. The largest flower in the world, Rafflesia, has no leaf, stem or root but they're quite rare and you'll only stumble across one if you're very lucky.

The view from the summit is worth the climb but make the most of it as it doesn't usually last long as shortly after sunrise the cloud normally starts to build up.

The climb is a workout for your thighs and calfs and once you are back in town, you will know exactly who climbed Mount Kinabalu recently, because they will be limping their way along the sidewalks.
