Located at the foot of the active Merapi volcano, Yogyakarta was in the 16th and 17th centuries the seat of the mighty Javanese empire of Mataram, from which present day Yogyakarta has inherited the best of traditions.

The city itself has a special charm which seldom fails to captivate the visitor. Gamelan, classical and contemporary Javanese dances, the wayang kulit leather puppet theater and other expressions of traditional art will keep the visitor spellbound. Local craftsmen excel in the arts of batiks, silver and leather work.

Day 2

BOROBUDUR - KETEP PASS MERAPI - YOGYAKARTA (B,L,D)
In the early morning at 5 am, take a walk and this time be dazzled by the magical sunrise at the great Buddhist temple of Borobudur and discover its mystery and history.

Borobudur, the most famous of Indonesia's temples is Buddhism's largest shrine in Indonesia, built in the 9th century and completed in the second half of the ninth century. Borobudur was unknown and neglected for almost a thousand years, covered under thick layers of volcanic ash. It consists of hundreds of wonderfully detailed statues and sculptures, representing Buddhist teachings mixed with images of Javanese life of a thousand years ago.

By 9 a.m, we return to hotel for breakfast. Check out and stopover to visit Mendut & Pawon Temples. Mendut is a 9th century Buddhist temple and the oldest among the 3 temples. Pawon temple was built with volcanic stones. Its architecture is a blend of old Javanese Hindu and Indian art. It is located on a wide terrace with steps. All parts are decorated with stupa(s) on dagoba(s) and its outside walls with symbolic pictures.

Mendut, Borobudur and Pawon, all of which are Buddhist temples, are each exactly aligned in one straight line and each a mile apart. Pawon temple is exactly in the central point of the straight line. The exact religious relationship between the three is known to exist, but is a long-forgotten mystery.

Next, proceed to view the beauty of Gunung Merapi from Kali Adem Village, passing through Salak Fruits Plantation. Traditional Javanese lunch will be served at Saung Apung Timbul Roso, a restaurant with huts built over a fishpond. At the restaurant, you will be able to enjoy the quiet and peaceful village ambience.

Go for a shopping trip at Beringharjo Traditional Market and Malioboro. The connected shopping areas have plenty of merchandise to offer such as batik, traditional snacks, Javanese herbs, rattan ornament and handicraft. This is the best place for souvenir hunting.

Day 3

YOGYAKARTA (B,L,D)
After breakfast, go for a drive to visit Indonesia's oldest palace, the Kraton, and then to Water Castle which was built in 1758.

Stopover at a traditional batik home industry before visiting Kotagede, a neat little town which was once the seat of the mighty Mataram empire. Since the 1930s, Kotagede has became famous as the center of the Yogya silverwork industry. You can also watch silver being transformed into beautiful works of art known as "Yogya Silver" in the workshops.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we proceed to Kasongan village where you can observe the art of making pottery from clay to their unique new designs. Later in the evening, you will be able to enjoy a romantic sunset at Parangtritis beach.
