Pulau Mantanani is a group of three isolated islands northwest of Kota Belud, 80 km north of Kota Kinabalu. It was so isolated in fact that not until recently, only a few locals knew the existence of the islands. One of the main attractions is swimming with dugongs (sea cows)! The sheltered bays around the Mantanani Islands provides an ideal habitat for dugongs with sea-grass beds found on shallow sandy areas around the islands. Despite their large dimensions of over 3m in length and 350 kg, dugongs can reach top speeds of 25 kmh. The average cruising speed of 10 kmh can be sustained for long periods and the dugong may travel for hundreds of km in just a few days and are listed as vulnerable to extinction.

The surrounding waters offer splendid fishing adventures, and scuba diving. Divers come here for the underwater wrecks, which still hold plenty of the secrets from the day they first sank, and are rarely visited. These wreck are home to a menagerie of marine creatures and offer great photo shoots for the underwater photography enthusiast. There are also coral reefs around the island and is ideal for the novice scuba diver.

With a small human population and little noisy boat traffic the place is tranquil. An excellent place to rest and relax and to while away your time in a beautiful environmnent.
