As the capital of North Sumatra, Medan has a very strategic position and is the third largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya. There are consulates of foreign countries and it is the primary center of activities of northern Sumatra. In the Malay language "Medan" means a large place to gather.
Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village at the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km north-west of Medan, Bukit Lawang is known for the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan (around 5,000 orangutans occupy the area), and also the main access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park from the east side.
Bukit Lawang rehabilitation center for orangutans was founded in 1973. The main purpose is to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting, trading and deforestation.
Bukit Lawang is a popular tourist destination for its laidback riverside lifestyle, jungle treks in the Gunung Leuser National Park, and its world-famous orangutan rehabilitation centre.
ARRIVE POLONIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT MEDAN – BUKIT LAWANG (L,D)
You will be met by our representative at Polonia International Airport Medan. Go on a day tour to Maimoon Palace where we will visit the Palace Of Sulthan Deli which was built in 1888. Stopover at batik shops for good product bargains.
After lunch, proceed for a 3 hour drive to Bukit Lawang for hotel check in.
Free at own leisure for the rest of the day after dinner.
BUKIT LAWANG (B,L,D)
After breakfast, trek through the forest before crossing a river by sampan to visit the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Catch them during feeding time at 8am. It will be a fantastic experience to watch the Orang Utan roaming freely in their natural surroundings. If you wish, you can continue to trek further in the jungle (optional) with a local experienced guide.
We will return to town for lunch at a local restaurant and if you are lucky you might be able to see more Orang Utans at the hotel.
In the afternoon, enjoy swimming or try rafting (with local experienced guide available) at nearby area.
DEPART MEDAN (B)
After breakfast, we will drive back to Medan, and if there is still some time we will visit some of the souvenirs and batik shops for some good product bargains. You will be transferred to the airport for your back flight home.
If your flight is a late afternoon or evening flight you will also enjoy complimentary transfer to visit Pasar Ikan Lama (traditional market), Medan Mall and Sun Plaza before transfer to the airport.
