Sigiriya tour packages & holidays
Sigiriya is located in central Matale District, Central Province of Sri Lanka. Make a point of visiting this city that is situated in an area full of massive columns of high rocks. This archaeological site is known for its 200m high fortress rock and the ruins of an ancient palace complex that is surrounded by reservoirs, gardens and different structures.
The major attractions in Sigiriya include a granite rock (180m tall) with steep sides and some points with tops overhanging the base. There is a stone stairway which leads to the top of the rock from the base. Halfway to the top is a giant pair of lion claws and the shape of an open lion mouth serving as the entrance to the royal palace. On the way, there is a large pond that was built by cutting out the rock and water brought by a hydraulic system to fill it.
During your travel, look for the famous ancient paintings known as "frescos" that are on large rocks in Sigiriya. The paintings initially covered large parts of the rocks but most have been destroyed. Stop by the Museum to see photos of excavation of Sigiriya, reproductions of the frescos and artifacts which were excavated from the site. Don't miss the mirror wall that has graffiti translations from 7th to 10th centuries AD.
The major activity to take part in while on holiday in Sigiriya is trekking up to the fortress. This can take up to about an hour and a half. If you are up for some physical challenge, climb the Pidurangala rock. You will love the breath taking view of the surrounding area and the nearby villages at the summit. On a clear day, the view extends over 19 km to Dambulla. Other activities you can take part in include wakeboarding, trekking, wildlife safaris, kite surfing, cycling, and bird watching.
