Yangon tour packages & holidays
Yangon is the biggest city in Myanmar and an increasingly popular holiday destination in Southeast Asia. Formerly called Rangoon, the city is also the former capital of Myanmar. Most international flights land in Yangon, and it is also a starting point for tours to other parts of Myanmar. Yangon has beautiful Buddhist pagodas (temples), interesting street markets and hotels for all budgets. Yangon is also the cultural center of Myanmar and a fast growing city.
Yangon is increasingly popular with independent travelers and backpackers as Myanmar is opening to tourism. One of its most famous tourist attractions is the Shwedagon Pagoda. There are many Buddhist temples in Yangon, but if you are only planning to see one, it should be the Shwedagon. This pagoda is the most important Buddhist pagoda and its golden roof can be seen from far away. The best time to visit is late afternoon, as the light is best at sunset, but early mornings are also popular. Another interesting pagoda is the Sule Pagoda, located right in the very center. There are good restaurants and coffee shops around the Sule Pagoda. Restaurants in Yangon serve Myanmar food and Asian food in general, as well as Indian food. There are also international restaurants in the city. Food in Yangon is more varied than in other parts of Myanmar.
The best time to travel to Yangon is in the winter, from November to February. The hot season in March and April can be extremely hot. Because Myanmar is a Buddhist country all the major Buddhist festivals are celebrated in Yangon, and the annual water festival in April is a major event. Yangon is a fascinating city to visit, especially for those who are looking for something different in Asia.
